The rambutan plant (scientific name: Nephelium lappaceum) is a tropical fruit tree commonly found in Indonesia.
It grows well in warm, humid climates and is widely planted in home gardens and farms.
Simple description:
Rambutan is a medium-sized tree that can grow up to 10–20 meters tall.
Its fruit is round or oval with red or yellow skin covered in soft hair-like spines.
Inside, the fruit has white, juicy flesh that tastes sweet and slightly sour.
The seed is in the center and is not usually eaten.
The leaves are green and shiny, and the tree produces small flowers before fruiting.
In Indonesia, rambutan is a popular seasonal fruit and is often eaten fresh or used in desserts.
In Indonesia, the fruiting and harvest time of the rambutan tree (Nephelium lappaceum) depends on rainfall and local climate, but there is a general pattern.
Fruit growing period:
Rambutan trees usually start flowering at the end of the dry season.
After flowering, it takes about 3–4 months for the fruit to fully develop and ripen.
Best harvest season:
The main harvest season is typically November to February (rainy season).
In some areas, there can be a smaller second season around May to June.
How to know it’s ready:
The skin turns bright red or yellow (depending on the variety).
The “hair” (spines) becomes soft and flexible.
The fruit tastes sweet and juicy, not sour.
So, in simple terms: rambutan fruits grow after the dry season and are best harvested during the rainy months, especially at the end of the year.
Fresh rambutan skins are a useful natural dye source because they contain plant pigments like:
Anthocyanins → give red to purple colour
Flavonoids → help strengthen color
These compounds are responsible for the red colour of the fruit peel, and they can be extracted for dyeing.
Usually gives pinkish, brown, or dark shades
The exact colour depends on:
Type of chemical used (mordant)
pH (acid or base condition)
Concentration of extract
Example:
Iron (FeSO₄) → darker color
Alum → lighter, brighter color
