Why Green is difficult ?
Green in plants mostly comes from Chlorophyll, a pigment that is:
Chemically unstable
Sensitive to heat, pH, light, and oxygen
This is why achieving a true, lasting green is one of the hardest challenges in natural dyeing.
When you boil leaves, the green turning yellow/brown is due to a chemical transformation:
Chlorophyll contains a magnesium (Mg) ion at its centre
Under heat + acidic conditions → Mg is removed
It converts into Pheophytin
Result:
Bright green → dull olive / yellowish tone
This is exactly why:
Boiling pandan, mango, or other leaves often gives yellow-green or brownish dye
Use cold extraction or low (~30–50°C)
Blend + soak instead of long boiling
Chlorophyll is more stable in neutral to slightly alkaline conditions
Avoid acidic water
You can:
Add a small amount of calcium carbonate (chalk) or baking soda (very minimal)
Chlorophyll degrades quickly after harvesting
Work with fresh leaves immediately
Long exposure = oxidation → colour loss
Copper acts by replacing magnesium in chlorophyll:
Forms Copper chlorophyllin
This complex is:
More stable to heat
More resistant to pH changes
Result:
Brighter, longer-lasting green
Less yellowing
Copper salts (e.g. copper sulfate):
Are heavy metals
Can accumulate in:
Water systems
Soil
Toxic to aquatic life
